The steady drumming of his fingers against the desk resonated throughout the department. He was the new guy and apparently new never meant better in the small town of Beacon Hills. Tap Tap Tap Tap. He paused. Tap Tap Tap Tap. He wondered what had happened in the past that so many people seemed so wary of him, almost as if they were all waiting for him to attack. It said a lot about the department and he admired the loyalty they all held for one another but it was downright annoying that every call was intercepted by the deputy before he sent off other officers. He was there too! He was young and able. Did they not see that?
A huff of annoyance left his mouth as he resumed his taping on the desk. Tap Tap Tap Tap. He had already filed the damn papers he had been given earlier that day. Perhaps if he offered to go on a coffee run? Standing tall, he searched for the Sheriff and almost hollered in joy when the man made his way to the empty coffee pot. The machine had broken earlier when he tried to get himself a cup, he just hadn't told anyone yet. “I can go for a coffee run?” The flicker of disbelief in the other man's eyes was quickly replaced by an uneasy nod. Did the other officers usually not offer to go and get the coffee?
Around the department, people began to shoot off their orders and Thomas reached for his phone to type them all in. Before he could ask for directions and money (despite him being able to pay for everything) the deputy handed him a fifty and a paper with directions. At last, he had something to do. He grabbed his jacket and badge from the desk before practially sprinting out the door.
Hopping into the cruiser they had assigned him, he imputed the directions to his phone and let siri lead the way. The gentle rumble of the engine did little to cover up the sounds of the outside world but it was a nice reminder that he was an actual officer of the law. Everyone around him became model citizens the second they would catch sight of the cruiser. He could get used to it.
After 10 minutes he had finally arrived. He eased the gentle beast to a full stop, parking in the designated lines, and made his way inside. The place was packed with teenagers, all too loud and brash. What he wouldn't give to have them all shut up. Didn't they all have school? Glancing at the clock, he saw that it was actually 3:30 in the afternoon, so they were all done with their mandated time inside that hell hole. Fun.
One 30 dollar coffee bill later, he was just about ready to kill everyone inside. How the poor barista put up with them, he would never know. “Is it always like this?” She nodded with a sad smile before handing him the coffee and his change. “Thanks for the coffee, ma'am. I hope to see you again soon.” He might have been laying it on too thick but the smile on her face made it all worth it. A quick wink and he was out of there. Away from those annoying children and their heachache inducing noises.
He was so close to actually making some distance between him and the coffee shop, when an idiot person not paying attention to where they were going, bumped into him. All those cups, now a waste. His shirt and pants were also completely soaked now. “You have got to be kidding me.” It burned somewhat, but it could have been worse. On the plus side, he now smelled like coffee.
