Free Period at the Library

Ariel was minding her own business – well that wasn’t so true; her business was doing her math homework, what she was doing was avoiding it by lazily flipping through her notes and occasionally looking over at what other people were doing. Mostly just hoping for some raucous. Though at this point she wasn’t sure if the noise would help her concentrate or just grab her attention even more, making her even less concentrated.

She was curious to see a red head sit by her table across from her. She raised one perfectly shape eyebrow at this, but the girl didn’t even look at her; she just sat down, opened her books and started working. Well, at least she wasn’t going to bother me. Though in a sense Ariel did crave some distraction. She looked at her watch. How has it only been five minutes? she wondered as she sighed looking down at her notes.

It's not even that she didn’t like math – she thought it was rather okay, more than just bearable even – she just couldn’t seem to focus. She was beginning to hate having free periods – she'd rather be in an actual classroom and learning something than doing this nothingness. She looked back at the girl across from her. Ariel couldn’t help but notice how meticulous she was – even her notes seemed impeccable from across the table, upside-down. The blonde recognized the math, and then looking closer at the girl she recognized her from class. Well at least you're starting to remember faces she encouraged herself (though it didn’t do much to her annoyed state of mind).

Looking from the beautiful notes of the red head to her own mess, she wondered when she had become so unorganized. Her notes were usually spot-on, but for the past few days they were quite lousy. She blamed the move of course; she was still getting used to the new town, the new school. She really did hope that was the reason because she couldn’t be disorganized – she loved it when things were in place and organized. She just needed some time to adjust. Plus, she really did have a lot on her mind at the moment.

An idea sprung to mind, which she thought would be easy enough to execute. "Hey," she said, not whispering of course because she was pro-noise, but not speaking out loud either because she wasn’t so stupid as to speak loudly inside the library where apparently silence was sacred, "we're in the same math class right?" she asked, though she knew the answer so she didn’t wait too long for the confirmation, "could I maybe have a look at your notes?" she asked, hoping it was polite enough to grant her her wish.

Ariel was happy to see the red head (red head? More like strawberry blonde Ariel mused, looking at her more closely now that they were actually conversing) had no objections with sharing, because Ariel knew there were people who were very reluctant to share. "Thanks" she said as she took the notes from the girl sitting across her. Ariel noticed that she was actually working on the same equation Ariel was and smiled to herself at the coincidence what are the odds she joked with herself, since she could (should?) probably find it out using simple math statistics and probability equations.

When the girl asked if Ariel was new Ariel looked up at her from the (As expected) meticulous notes, "yeah" she started saying, a little less excited, "we just moved back a few days ago. Luckily I had no trouble with switching schools after the term already started" she added, remembering what Vincent had told her the other day (which apparently she took quite for granted). Ariel was a bit pleased though, that the girl recognized her – or lack thereof – it meant she wasn’t the ghost at school as she thought she were. Everyone were so busy with their lives, unable to see outside of their own bubble. Ariel could understand it, and mostly she didn’t mind keeping to herself, but she had to admit – it was nice to be noticed. "I'm Ariel by the way" she said with a small smile, figuring the least she could do in return for these amazing notes was introduce herself.

Notes: sorry it short... :/

Ariel saw the little movement that meant she had caught the girl's attention and she knew she made a mistake: she had let something slip. Ariel was usually much more careful with what she said, especially to strangers, but she was definitely out of her element these past few days. Luckily, the mishap was soon cleared to her when Lydia asked about her living in Beacon Hills in the past. She didn’t know what bothered her more about answering that question – having to explain why they moved away or why they moved back. The former she just wasn’t able to share so easily and latter she really couldn’t share at all. "Oh yeah," she started saying as if she wasn’t unnerved by having to answer that question (or even that she let it slip and the question was even asked in the first place) "we moved away when I was younger but now we've returned" Ariel finished with a small smile as if that explained everything – which she was fully aware hardly explained anything. But then again, she just asked if they lived there and not why they left or returned so in fact she did answer the question completely and wasn’t being rude at all (which was always a plus).

Ariel was now much more focused on Lydia; the girl did not miss a thing and Ariel noted to herself that she would need to be careful around her, at least until she knew whether or not she could be trusted. When Lydia mentioned her grandmother calling her Ariel because of her hair Ariel of course immediately understood why – she was just reminded of the constant comparison between her name and the Disney princess when she met Vincent the other day – but this time she took the reference affectionately, given its context to Lydia as a child with her grandmother; it was kind of sweet so Ariel couldn’t help but smile fondly when she mentioned it. "Nice to meet you too" Ariel greeted, feeling more at east, as if they had something in common because her name was Lydia's childhood nickname.

Ariel looked back at the burrowed notes – they were meticulous indeed and very organized but Ariel was happy to see that her notes didn’t lack any substantial information; they just weren't as tidy as she would have liked them to be. Hopefully she would get back into her groove soon and have her notes organized, and her books less highlighted. Concentrating on the problem at hand Ariel was happy to see she could solve the problem with ease using the combined notes. She grinned to herself at her small success; Ariel sure did like it when she got things right. When Lydia spoke again Ariel looked up at her, she didn’t realize they were going to keep on talking since they were obviously both here to study, but Ariel certainly didn’t mind the conversation (even if she felt like she was about to understand how to solve the next problem). Ariel was glad to hear what Lydia had to say. Sure, Ariel was very much able to manage on her own, but it would be nice if someone who already knew the neighborhood showed her around (would definitely save a lot of time fumbling around). Also, perhaps Lydia knew something about all the weird things that were happening lately; she seemed (and proved) to be quite observant.

Ariel was working on the last math problem she had when she glanced at Lydia, wondering what she was doing. Ariel actually very much appreciated the fact that while they were seated across the table from each other, and have spoken a bit, Lydia didn’t feel a need to have small talk. It meant she was comfortable with silence, which was something Ariel was as well. Of course, it was possible that Lydia was simply working on her school work so she focused on that rather than on Ariel. The blonde had a feeling it was the combination of the both, just like with herself. She noticed the strawberry-blonde had moved on to a different topic and briefly wondered if they shared other classes. Ariel wasn’t sure which, but she definitely remembered seeing her in more than just math class.

Finishing the last problem successfully Ariel closed the notebooks and handed over the one belonging to Lydia back to her, "thanks" she said simply, confident in what she learned from Lydia's notes as well as the value of her own to give them back without copying them first. Ariel noticed Lydia was eating a snack and decided if she was taking a little break and Ariel herself had just finished her own work she could risk resuming their conversation. Sure, Ariel wasn’t much for small talk, but Lydia did extend a courtesy of showing her around and Ariel intended on showing gratitude. Plus, from a first-meeting stand point, Lydia seemed nice and clever, which was a good (albeit also dangerous) combination. "So, what's interesting to do here anyway?" Ariel asked casually looking at Lydia with a small smile.

Notes: I APOLOGIZE for Ariel not responding verbally to Lydia's gracious offer to show her around. I honestly thought she did but apparently it was all in her (my) mind.... D: I hope she doesnt think Ariel's a total snob :S

At Lydia's response Ariel could help but chuckle along and add a little shrug as well, knowing full well they were stuck in a small town surrounded by woods and nothing too interesting to do (besides hunt of course). it wasn’t like back home where she was only a relatively short train ride from a bog city where she could explore and do whatever she felt like either alone or with her friends. That was why Ariel was glad to have met Lydia, who seemed very welcoming and like the type of person who knew how to get around, and more importantly – where.

"Definitely!" Ariel agreed excited, happy to see that they both were on the same page. "I'd love that" she started saying, "I'm getting really bored of being either at home, school, or the woods – by myself" she rolled her eyes jokingly, aware that what she said made her sound like a total loner but at the moment it was the truth. She was actually slowly meeting new people and making friends, but most of the teenagers already had their tight-knit groups and joining wasn’t easy. Add to that the fact that Ariel did fine by herself, the chances of her forming another group of friends like she did back home seemed slim to her. But she didn’t want to shut down everyone completely, she simply welcomed anyone who wanted to talk, and those who didn’t – fine with her as well.

I started teaching and apparently its a LOT MORE demanding than I imagined D: Im starting to get a better hang of things so hopefully this hiatus of mine wont happen again, so I hope youll forgive me the long wait.... :S if you want to end the scene(/start a new one?) Id totally understand, its up to you!

Ariel smiled back at Lydia when she said she'd be more than happy to show her around. Ariel was very pleased with herself - making friends and socializing! Her father would be so proud. And also, while Ariel was more than capable of being on her own, it was fun having friends. At least, everything is fun in the beginning, but when she needs to start lying - that's when it gets hard. But that's getting way too ahead of herself. Lydia seemed like a good person and could potentially be a good friend - but one step at a time. The strawberry blonde looked like she had more to say, and soon enough she actually invited her to an upcoming party!

Ariel grinned in delight at the prospect of a party; she may not be one to party every night, but it was fun getting out and hanging out with friends in a different environment. Plus, parties are never boring - and Ariel could use some action right about now. Everything was so dull at the moment. "Thanks!" she started saying, "I'd love to come! Are you brining anyone or am I your date?" she asked jokingly. It was just a tease; sure, she and Lydia just met, but Lydia was beautiful and from what she saw in the girl's notebook - very smart - she was a complete catch.
