What on Earth is Going On? [Issac]

What on earth those two boys could have been up to was beyond her. The two couldn’t possibly be fighting over a girl again. That was gone, especially now with Allison no longer among the living. She had no idea what could have caused the crash but she was more than sure that she would find out. If both of them were involved, it would take a moment for them to decide who would go up and explain to her what was going on. For the moment, of course, there was no one peeking into her doorway of her bedroom to tell her what was happening or what had happened so she merely sat there in bed and sighed, waiting for one or both boys to show up in her room. Sadly, they didn’t exactly move all that quickly, or he if one of the boys had done it all by himself.

Soon enough, of course, young Isaac Lahey peeked his head into her bedroom with a paper towel pressed against his hand. Her eyebrows knitted together in worry as he told her good morning. She looked up at him and smiled a little as he apologized for waking her and saying that he was busy in the kitchen. “Isaac, really, you can call me Melissa, I don’t mind,” she insisted for what must have been the 100th time since he had moved into the McCall home. Once she had heard what Derek had done to poor Isaac, she was more than winning to bring him in. The poor boy had already been through so much and Derek to do such a thing to him upset her and her motherly instincts. She didn’t fully blame Derek, of course, everyone got angry, but to throw something at Isaac? She didn’t approve.

Melissa sighed a little. “What did you do to your hand, sweetheart?” She asked curiously as she pushed the blankets off of her and stood up, moving towards him. Thankfully, Melissa wore practical pajamas to bed and nothing short and silky. She pushed her up long sleeves and grabbed the paper towel from the boy’s hand once she was close enough. She looked at the slowly healing cut. She frowned a little. “How did you even cut your hand this deep? Were you juggling knives?” She joked as she looked at it, making sure it healed nice and easily before she looked over at the dirty blonde before him, waiting for an answer that she was sure would come eventually. For now, of course, he was silent on the matter, which was fine with her. Teenage boys eventually told the truth, especially to their mothers/mother figures/female guardians and whatnot.

Melissa was rather used to the confusion that often lined Isaac’s face when she showed any sort of concern towards him or ask about his life. It was just the way that things were with her. She was a mother, not only to her son but to his friends, especially to his friends who had no mothers. She felt that it was her duty to do such things. Even so, she was used to the concern that would come across Isaac’s face and the occasional slip up from Stiles with calling her “mom” or “mother.” Those two poor boys were the two whom she had grown most attached to. Stiles for obvious reasons, she was the son of her best friend. Isaac lived with her as her son, well, almost. He was mostly just an orphan teenager who was seventeen and therefore an adult in the state of California. Even so, Melissa adopted him in a way anyway.

Isaac flushed t Melissa’s question before he started to gush out an apology so fast she almost couldn’t hear what he was saying. He said that he knocked her vase over before he said that he was going to pay her back and she smiled over at him and shook her head. She giggled a little bit and gently wrapped her arms around Isaac, hugging him close and comforting him for a moment before she let him go, grinning. “Isaac, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. That vase was given to me by Raphael anyway,” she said with a shake of her head. “I always hated it,” she whispered to him with a grin. “Besides, accidents happen. Don’t worry about it. Like Scott hasn’t broken things in this house. Scott and Stiles,” she said with a pointed look towards where her son’s bedroom was.

Gently, Melissa turned Isaac towards the door. “C’mon, let’s see if we can clean up and make us a nice breakfast, what do you think?” She asked with a smile as she followed after him, her bare feet not making any noise on her carpet. ”And if Scott’s not home that’s his loss,” she said, loud enough as she passed her son’s door to where he would wake up. She heard nothing behind his door and shook her head, still leading Isaac down the hallway and down the stairs towards the kitchen. Once in the kitchen she paused a bit and then laughed. “Like I said, first we clean up, and then we make breakfast,” she told him with a grin as she gave him a squeeze and moved to start cleaning up, doing everything she could to let Isaac know that the mess was okay and that she had had worse.

The mess in the kitchen was something that Melissa had been partially expecting, especially when the boy said that he was trying to make breakfast. What she hadn’t expected when she stepped into the kitchen was the degree to which the mess was made. The kitchen was just about a disaster, not that she couldn’t clean it up. She could. It would be easy, especially with the two of them. There would be three but she had no idea what on earth Scott was doing or where on earth he was, but she digressed. She let out a sigh and a bit of a laugh as the boy continued to apologize. She gently squeezed his shoulder in reassurance, especially when he apologized yet again and said that he didn’t think he would want to eat a breakfast that he had made since he was bad at it.

Melissa shrugged her shoulders. “Eh, it’s fine. I mean, it takes practice to cook very well. And I’ll tell you a secret, Scott can’t cook for anything,” she told him, her tone in a mock whisper towards the end of her words. She smiled at him, before she looked back at the mess. “Alright, you start on one side and I’ll start on the other. We will meet in the middle,” she said with a nod of her head, approve of her own cleaning plan. “If you can’t find anything, let me know and I’ll tell you where they are,” she told him with a smile as she reached into a cupboard and pulled out a trash bag. She opened it up and started to pick up whatever was on the floor, including the glass from the vase very carefully. She made her way around and muttered about fetching the broom later.

Cleaning didn’t take too long, thankfully. It took maybe an hour for them to do, which meant that there was still time to make a nice breakfast. Besides, even if it was close to lunch time, Melissa would have insisted on breakfast. She was craving it and there was nothing wrong with having breakfast food for lunch or dinner. So when the kitchen was all clean, she turned and looked over at Isaac with a smile. “Well it looks like we are all done! Time to start cleaning,” she said with a bright smile as she tied off the trashbag and looked around. “What were you making before?” She asked curiously. It looked like eggs, bacon, and a few other treats, but she couldn’t be sure. Plus, she had no idea what was still in the pantry/fridge/freezer for them to eat.

With the cleaning done, Melissa suggested making breakfast anyway. She asked Isaac what he had been trying to make and he told her that first he had the idea of making French toast but he thought it was probably too hard for him to try. He then joked that scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast were too hard for him to try as well. She chuckled, grinning over at him and shaking her head. “Eh, sometimes you gotta start with something small,” she told him with a bright grin before he said that he hoped they still had something to make left, but if not he could run to the store. She smiled. “I think we’ll be okay, and if we need to, I can have you run to the store,” she agreed before she looked into the fridge and grinned. “Well lucky for you we still have food for breakfast, but we may need to go to the store later,” she confessed.

The cooking of breakfast was always a fun activity in the McCall house and Melissa wanted to keep it that way. It was something that her and Scott would sometimes do when they were both off from work and school and were able to relax and enjoy each other’s company. They’d spend most of the day together and then Scott would go over to Stiles’ or Stiles could come over to their home and the boys would goof around and play while Melissa relaxed or made dinner. It was perfect and she missed those days sometimes. The times before Scott was a werewolf and when life was simple for her asthmatic child. Of course, life changed and if it hadn’t have been him becoming a werewolf, it would have been him growing up and being a resilient teenager. She was glad it hadn’t been him being a resilient teenager.

So, Melissa was more than a little pleased about the fact that she would be able to make breakfast with Isaac. “What do you say, should we get started?” She asked, smiling as pulled out the food items to make breakfast. Eggs, what was left of the bacon, and some bread for toast were what she set out on the counter. “Is there anything else you want? Pancakes maybe?” She asked curiously, knowing she should make a feast. Teenage boys ate a lot of food because they were all still growing so she knew more than anything that she needed to make a lot of food and she wouldn’t believe him if she said that he wasn’t hungry. After all, boys were always hungry, regardless of their age.

Melissa wasn’t blind. She had seen the look on Isaac’s face when she had asked him about making pancakes as well. He had smiled a little and gazed off. She kept silent as she waited for him to return to the land of the conscious. She had no doubt that he was off in his own little world for whatever reason. She knew that she did it sometimes. It was the way that it was when you thought of memories and other such things. She knew better than anyone. She often liked to think about the good times with Rafael, the times with her Scott and Rafael. They were fun memories, and better than reality sometimes, but then reality always kicked in and she was reminded that Rafael had hurt Scott and she wanted him gone until he could get himself sober. He had, but that still didn’t mean that she forgave him, and it didn’t mean that Scott forgave him either. It was the way she liked it.

After a moment, Isaac returned to the world of the conscious and he said that she didn’t have to make pancakes and that he would be fine without them. She gave him a look, not believing him but smiled when he smiled at her. He then looked away and she paused a little. She was used to his shy and skittish behavior. It was something she expected given his history. He still felt like he was alone and that he had no one despite how Melissa had done what she could to try and make him feel as though he was part of this family. She was sure that he wasn’t sure he did belong here or anything like that. It was upsetting but she could only do so much aside from telling him firmer, but if she did, she was worried that he may shy away even more. It was a little upsetting.

Melissa was quick to make a decision. “Pancakes it is then!” She cheered, smiling a little as she turned to grab the mix out of the cupboard. “Alright, I’m going to have you mix the batter, or butter the toast… Perhaps we’ll go with the toast first, huh?” She asked with a small smile as she turned to look at him. She then turned back to the batter box, looking at it and trying to see what all she needed to make the batter. She then pulled out the toaster, skillet, and a few other things before she set them all down and started to work her mother breakfast cooking magic. She had no doubt that soon enough breakfast would be ready with Isaac’s help, and perhaps she’d get him a little more comfortable in the kitchen.

It was fun for Melissa to make breakfast with someone helping her, or at least in the kitchen with her. After all, it wasn’t like she was able to do this as often anymore. Usually she was able to do these sorts of fun things with Scott or Stiles or the both of them, but now with work and all this werewolf business it wasn’t something that was able to happen all the time. Still, she was glad that she was able to make these positive memories with Isaac, who had become sort of like a son to her. She had adopted him into her home, even if he didn’t really need anyone to given how he was almost 17 years old. Still, she took care of him, worried about him, and tried her best to be there for him and support him.

Making breakfast was going really well, extremely well even as Melissa began to pour the pancake batter into the saucepan. She heard Isaac ask for her for something until he stopped, trailing off. She turned to him, looking a little confused as he blushed crimson and scooted away from him. She was confused before she thought about what he said. He had called her mom. Yeah, that probably wasn’t something he was used to, especially after his mother. She tried to smile at him comfortingly but he just looked at the ground instead, making her wonder if she should even try to help comfort him at all. In the end, she figured it would be best for him to stay a little quiet as he tried to wrap his head around things and figure out what was going on. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for him to speak again and Melissa was able to enter Mother Mode.

Isaac said that he was sorry (after stuttering a bit) and then said that he hadn’t meant to. Melissa a sighed a little and watched him as he pushed the bread into the toaster and moved away from the food and towards him. Gently, she placed her hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Isaac. I don’t mind. It’s not like I haven’t been called Mom before…and besides, you’re not the only one who’s called me that on accident,” she said with a small smile, thinking about Stiles. She then paused and pulled him towards her again, hugging him. “And I know this may be a little weird, but I do consider you like a son, Isaac. I know your life before this wasn’t the best, but I’m hoping I’m making it at least a little better than it was,” she told him with a small, comforting smile, hoping to at least put him a little more at ease.
