Initially, Lyn had just been on her regular afternoon run through the preserve, but after a while she stopped dead on her tracks. This wasn’t her usual route.
Muttering curses under her breath for getting so distracted, she took a moment to see if she couldn’t find out where exactly she had ended up and recognized with a start that she had been here once more. Her feet had carried her in the direction of the old Hale House without her even realizing it. Morgan had pointed her in the approximate direction a little while ago from this very place.
For a moment, Caelyn was ready to turn on her heels and return straight back home, certain that she couldn’t bear the sight of one more burnt down house, then she caught a familiar scent and her curiosity won over doubt and grief.
Pushing herself a little, she started to jog where the scent lead her. She hadn’t seen Peter in a while, and in the meantime heard some disturbing rumors. None of it fit with what impression she had of the man, even though the people she had heard these from seemed to be quite sure about it. It was time she went searching for the truth, and who better to ask?
Besides, whether she wanted to admit it or not, part of her had not only enjoyed Peter Hale’s company but also missed the man. It wasn’t something she should do, getting attached to anyone, she would only lose them again, but it seemed like the damage was already done.
When she left the last trees behind, entering a clearing, she had expected to be confronted with burned ruins. Instead, she stared at the completely rebuilt house in amazement. This was… not what she had expected, but it certainly explained Peter’s scent lingering about. If he lived here, that would, in fact, explain a lot. Well… only one way to find out. Since there were no other recent scents in the air, she just walked up to the house, knocking. Now there was only to hope that Peter didn’t have any objections to her just dropping in like this, but if he had, she would find out soon enough.
